I love love and I believe in soulmates! Soulmate humans, soulmate dogs, soulmate places, and yassss, gimme all those soulmate jobs too. The Oxford dictionary defines a soulmate as someone ‘ideally suited to another‘ and hell yes, I believe that there is a job out there that is ideally suited to me at this very point in time. But like any kind of soulmate, the biggest issue is how in the triple F are you supposed to stumble upon this pot of gold at the end of a rainbow?
Well kids, I’m here to tell you that those covid experts were right about one thing: test, test, test. You gotta get out there and test out different roles and industries to learn what works for you and what doesn’t. I recommend starting by first defining your idea of a soulmate job. Here’s mine –>
My soulmate job needs to be:
- remote AF because you are correct, I live solely for my dog
- makes a meaningful, positive impact to this horrific but beautiful world we live in… did I mention I’m a millennial?
- pays me bank because revlon was right all along, I’m worth it
- allows me work-life balance to grow my craft AND my soul
- gives me a work family, the kind that signs off their daily stand ups with “love you guys!!!!”
Next, make a list of places that will help you source leads for these kinds of jobs: ask your friends, ask your family, ask your old coworkers, use chatgpt… this is where you hustle, hustle, hustle! And the more you can streamline all these sources in one place, the easier your life will be. My corporate path is product management so these are the places I have been using to find amazing companies and open roles.
- Your own connections
- 4 day work week
- Lightspeed
- Wellfound
- 80,000 hours
- Tech jobs for good
- Built In
- Mind the Product
I also signed up for facebook groups like Women In Product and Women in Tech and was able to get a few interviews and direct conversations with hiring managers through the awesome women there.
The following might be a bit more niche, but if you’re into non-profits, I also subscribe to Dan’s list, a service that emails me new roles in LA. And if you happen to be in Colorado, Luke’s circle is another one that’s useful.
Know that much like your definition of soulmate job, open roles will change over time. This is why I keep a running list of my favorite companies/organizations and set up alerts in LinkedIn (and others) for roles they might post in the future. They might not be ready for me as their soulmate employee yet but in a year they might be!
Last few notes – I have found that having a few templates of cover letters for certain roles and certain industries really helps when you’re aggressively looking. You can use each as a starting point when applying and customizing for any particular role in that field. Also, learn to chatgpt like a mofo for a baseline of a cover letter for any open position you do find! And last but not least, Glassdoor the crap out of interview questions for the organization you are able to get in front of.
That brings me to the age old question – what do you do while you’re waiting, eagerly anticipating this soulmate but haven’t quite made the connection you’re looking for yet? Unlike romantic relationships, in this case, I say go ahead and settle. You can live without a make-out sesh, but you can’t live without food coz friends, even a big mac is like 10 bucks now. We really are in the dark ages, as if we needed any more proof of that. So settle, settle, settle.
Settle your happy a** right into that cozy, practical job because one day you will find your dream job, but until then you’ll need to stay alive and kickin’. And there is nothing more powerful than ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive! Let’s go get that practical day job that works for us, on our terms, and on our timeline!
